Study Abroad Belize: Emphasis on the Study
Although I have traveled abroad in the past, this was the first time that I felt my presence in another locale truly made an impact, both on my own life and on that of others. It was truly an amazing experience that allowed me to get to know individuals who I had not yet had the pleasure of knowing personally, as well as improved the relationships I had with both faculty and students in the Counselor Education program. It also allowed us to collaborate with colleagues from another university as well as many in the country of Belize. These relationships that were formed and grown during the 8 days in Belize are ones that will stick with us in the future and shape who we are as students, teachers, counselors, and citizens.
THE FOOD: One of my favorite aspects of exploring other cultures! I used this opportunity to try as many new things as possible.

THE SCHOOL: Rural school serving ages 5-14 in the Stann Creek District of Belize

THE GARIFUNA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE: This group of people have worked to keep their heritage and culture alive in Belize after having experienced a tragic past

THE MAYA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE: This group of people continue to practice their spiritual rituals and teach others about their heritage in rural Belize

THE PROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION: We had the opportunity to meet with and share information with professionals in the counseling, social work, and disability services arenas. This was a particularly important and educational piece of our experience that taught us much about the similarities of the fields regardless of location.

THE LASTING BOND: This trip allowed for some amazing relationships to be built and so much fun to be had. The joy is so evident on everyone’s faces!

THE GORGEOUS SCENERY & THE FUN!

If you’re ever presented with the chance to explore Belize, I strongly encourage anyone to do so. The small fishing village of Hopkins was a gorgeous area to relax and be immersed in the local culture without the hustle and bustle of the city. I will take with me so many memories and the knowledge that we have made an impact on the people of Belize, just as they have made an impact on us.
