Traveling Changes You; Belize definitely changed me!

Reflecting…

My study abroad trip to Belize has been invaluable. From the time I boarded the plane in the United States to leave for Belize, I was excited. Upon landing in Belize, a feeling of “dreamlike” was added to the excitement. I have benefited tremendously learning from the people in Belize; therefore, my work has been impacted by this experience in my awakening of remembering to always be open to learning from others.

After facilitating during the two community learning exchanges in Belize, I now have a higher level/standard of professionalism in which I view myself as a counselor. In addition, I have now had experiences which enable me to challenge others to challenge themselves in their thinking about what they can/cannot accomplish.

I have been reminded of the impact of continuing to sit in the student seat even when I am the counselor; I should always remember that I can (and should be) learning from others. There is a wealth of knowledge in hearing the stories of others, learning from others and learning about other cultures. This knowledge is invaluable to my intellect, character development, and in keeping me more connected and less divided with those whom I serve. I now have a renewed mindset of staying in the seat of the learner even when I am the teacher.

From my waterfall experience to having a renewed passion to teach and a new passion to travel; I feel I will one day be back in Belize. As the quote says; “Be fearless in pursuit of what sets your soul on fire;” traveling sets my soul on fire.  I also once heard this quote that says, “To travel is to live!” While I agree with those words, I would add to it, “To travel is to live and to learn!”
